The bones when we are born are soft and are formed by cartilage. As we grow the cartilage is transformed into bone and it is only preserved at the ends of the bones and in some very specific parts of the body, such as the ears and tip of the nose. When we stop growing, around the age of twenty, the growth cartilage is ossified, this is the reason we went from having 350 bones at birth, to 206 when we are adults.

In the bone, there are two types of cells. Some of these cells deposit the calcium in the bones, and the others reabsorb. When the bones are already formed, we have more cells from the former, although the others also do their job and do not let the bones grow uncontrollably. When we break a bone these cells are responsible for forming new bone tissue to repair the bone.

Calcium of bones:

Yoram Yasur Abt: “The calcium we need to form bones is absorbed from food. As we get older, bones lose calcium through the cells that make up the bone lining and they become more fragile and brittle. This process is called osteoporosis. When this stage is reached, it is very difficult to deposit calcium again, becoming brittle. To prevent osteoporosis, we must accumulate enough calcium during youth”.

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease. It reduces the number of minerals, mainly calcium and is characterized by the loss of bone mass. There is an opposite effect in the absorption of the calcium that makes them weaker and more fragile to fractures.

The bones are formed by bone tissue and bone marrow. The skeleton is divided into bones of the skull, spine and limbs, and bones are classified into long, short and flat.

  • The long ones are in the extremities.
  • Shorts have similar dimensions and are in the feet, hands and spine.
  • The planes are formed by two sheets of compact tissue, they are the bones of the skull and the pelvis, among others.

We must obtain calcium through a natural diet and foods that facilitate it to penetrate into the bone”. Calcium needs more nutrients to stick to the bone like: Vitamin D and K, magnesium, manganese, zinc, phosphorus, which has to be in proportion to calcium.

There are foods that decalcify your bones, so we must control their consumption, some of the most common are:

  • Sugar, too much salt, dairy, protein-rich diets because they acidify the body, tobacco, phosphorus imbalance.
  • Protein-rich diets acidify the body, the advice of professionals is to combine the consumption of fish, meat, dairy and eggs with that of nuts, pulses and soy, also rich in protein.
  • Tobacco and alcohol are also bad for bones.
  • Some drugs can promote decalcification, such as: corticoids, anticoagulants, antacids, some diuretics.

Recommended foods that provide calcium and strengthen them:

We believe that the main source of calcium is milk and its derivatives but this is not so and there is a large variety of vegetables rich in calcium. In addition, the calcium of these foods is more digestible than that of milk and its derivatives. Some vegetables rich in calcium are, spinach, kale, onion, watercress, chard, greens, thistle, broccoli, etc.

Also, legumes contain calcium, white beans, chickpeas, lentils and soybeans, are the best known. Some nuts, also rich in calcium, include nuts, hazelnuts, and pistachios. There is a wide variety of fish, anchovies, sardines, sole, and also seafood. Other sources of calcium are algae, tofu, soy milk, and sesame seeds.

The sedentary life harms them. It has been shown that practicing physical exercise promotes a higher bone mass formation and also improves muscle coordination and reduces the risk of falls and doing it outdoors is even better because the sun gives us vitamin D.

In addition to the recommended foods, it should be varied, with quantities proportioned to age, gender and height, also according to the physical activity of each person. Ideally, we should stick to a weight proportioned to a new physical constitution, because the weight influences the health of the bones. Very thin people are more likely to have osteoporosis, and tend to have them smaller, so any variation in bone density can affect them. Obese people, although they tend to have thicker and heavier bones, are not the best thing for their health.
